Germans
in Britain
A Website highlighting
the amazing history and
richly varied contribution
of
more than 1000 years of Germans coming to Britain.
Like almost no other ethnic group Germans have reached almost all
levels of British society from indentured labour to the throne, from the
Admiralty to the PoW camp and the firing squad, from kerbsides of the East End
to the commanding heights of the City.
For
more than a 1000 years, Germans came to these shores as visitors &
warriors, salesmen & spies, composers & courtiers and bankers &
bomber pilots. And for all these years
the British have welcomed them as relatives, married them as wives, defeated
them as invaders and invited them as investors.
The
story of German immigration is unparalleled in its wide variety and sheer
length, yet compared to the immigrations from Asia and the West Indies,
compared to the East European Jews and the Irish, the German contribution to
these isles is virtually unknown.
Many
British people living today will have forgotten German ancestors, people
written out of family history, their names and identities changed, some even
divorced and deported.
It is this forgetting of one of
Britain’s most remarkable group of immigrants that we want to stop.
With
our site we do not aim to set out a deeply academic analysis of all issues
involved,
to raise your
awareness
and
ignite your interest in German immigration.
We
also hope to give you some ideas where to go if you want to know more
about the Germans, Britain’s hidden immigrants.
This site is still under construction.
